Boeing will increase 737 production to 35 a month in early 2012, up from a previously planned goals, the company announced Tuesday.
Last May, all nine of the biggest US airlines tracked (the big
five ‘legacy’ carriers plus Alaska, AirTran, jetBlue and Southwest) reported a
decline in demand (as measured by system RPMs – Revenue Passenger Miles). This
May, for the first time in ages, all nine are likely to show year-on-year
demand growth (though jetBlue and United have yet to report their figures).
With the global economy continuing to improve, there is steady
improvement in demand for air travel as well as cargo since the beginning of
2010, after being badly affected by the economic downturn. Business travel,
which is directly affected by the economic environment, plunged to an all-time
low in 2009 as many corporations slashed travel budgets. Leisure travel as well
as cargo also showed a remarkable decline.
