Passengers flying with
the airlines in the United States continue to increase in number, especially
among those flying on the “low cost” carriers. These increases fuel expansion for
the airline industry, which will have to increase the number of aircraft that
they fly to meet the increasing demand for air travel.
The cost of oil spiked in mid 2008, quickly followed by the worst economic downturn in
over eight decades, causing an immediate downturn in the airline industry. Now,
with the economy on the mend, demand for air travel is increasing from preceding
year’s depressed levels.
General Dynamics said Wednesday that its Gulfstream unit received orders for more business jets in the third quarter than in any comparable period since mid-2008, another indication of recovery in the market for corporate planes.
Southwest Airlines posted a third-quarter profit of $205 million, or 27 cents per share,
Thursday morning — a significant jump from a net loss of $16 million a year ago.

During the quarter, the Company reported operating income of $56.7 million. AirTran Holdings Inc. will also boost seating capacity next year 3 percent to 4 percent as the carrier adds six new aircraft to its fleet, Chief Executive Officer Bob Fornaro said.
