Airlines in the United States are continuing to hire pilots at a very healthy pace. As
they compete with each other for qualified pilots, a few of the airlines have
begun to lower some of the minimum requirements necessary to get an interview
with them.
I was recently invited by AOPA to give a
presentation at the Aviation Summit in long Beach California. I began by
informing the audience of aviators and guests that there was good news, that
the airline industry had turned the economic corner and the resulting
profitability meant pilots are being recruited and hired by both Regional
Airlines and Major Airlines alike.

presentation was about how to get a good flying job in the airline industry,
and I began by telling the assembled group of aviators that I had good news for
them: The airlines are hiring again and the prospects are improving quickly for pilots
who hope to fly for them. Not only that, but hiring is going to increase at
all levels of aviation for the foreseeable future.
As many as 80 percent of all job openings are filled by networking: which means that solid networking skills are essential to your career success, especially in a competitive industry such as aviation. Networking is an essential part of any pilot’s job search, whether trying to get your first flying job or when trying to climb the career ladder
to flying bigger aircraft at another airline.
I recently joined nearly ten thousand pilots and aviation enthusiasts gathered in Long Beach, California, for the 2010 AOPA Aviation Summit. I was there to sit
on a panel of distinguished veterans of the airline industry who had come to
share expertise on how to get a good flying job.
The Airline Industry in the United States
is projected to post $4 billion in profits for 2010 according to the chairman
of the newly formed United Continental Airlines.
Flying with the Airlines account for the greater part of corporate travel, but scores
of corporations are gradually returning to flying their own aircraft. Executives
seem anxious to steer clear of flight delays and other potential snags common
when flying from crowded airports.
US Airways will fill 500 flight crew-member positions next year by recalling laid-off employees and hiring new personnel. The majority of the 80 pilots and 420 flight attendants will be working by July, the company said. Employees will be based in Charlotte, N.C.; Philadelphia; Washington, D.C.; and Phoenix.
Republic Airways Holdings Inc. confirmed today that it had
placed a firm order for six E190 jets with Embraer and a conditional firm order
for 18 additional Embraer 190 or 195 jets.
