Boeing has released its most recent Current Market Outlook which projects a demand for 35,280 new aircraft over the next 20 years, and a doubling of the world fleet over the next two decades. Passenger traffic and cargo traffic are each expected to grow 5% annually. The market for narrow body aircraft continues to be the main driver of the forecast and Boeing anticipates 24,670 new single-aisle aircraft will be needed in this segment because of the growth of low-cost carriers and airlines from emerging markets overseas. There will be a need for 8,590 new multi-aisle wide-bodied aircraft, Boeing said, fueled in part by airlines replacing their older fleet with new, more fuel-efficient aircraft. “Our customers are focused on growing their networks, managing their capacity and investing in new fleets,” Boeing Commercial Airplanes VP marketing Randy Tinseth said. “These trends will shape market demand for airplanes that have highly efficiency, low operating costs, environmentally progressive technologies and a great passenger experience.”
