Southwest Airlines Reports Record Profits, Eyes Expansion
Southwest Airlines Co. reported a 42% rise in profit for the second-quarter and said it plans to resume capacity growth next year and resume fleet expansion as soon as it meets its long-term financial return target. Southwest said it could hit its long-term profitability target as early as next year. If so, expansion will require that more pilots be hired in the midst of a growing pilot shortage.

JetBlue Airways Reports Rise in Passenger Traffic
JetBlue Airways reported that its traffic results for June 2012 showed the number of passengers flying on JetBlue increased 9.7 percent from June 2011, as the number of JetBlue’s available airline seats increased by 4.8 percent compared to the same time period last year.

United Airlines Orders 150 New Generation 737s Worth $14.7 Billion
United Airlines ordered 150 Boeing 737s on Thursday, a victory for Boeing as well as an indication that the world’s largest airline is leaning more toward a fleet filled with Boeing aircraft. The order is worth 14.7 billion and is for 100 737 MAX aircraft and 50 737-900ERs.

SkyWest Airlines Agrees to Buy 100 Mitsubishi RJs for $4.2 Billion
St. George Utah based SkyWest Inc., holding company for SkyWest Airlines and ExpressJet Airlines, signed an agreement in principle with Mitsubishi Aircraft Corp. for 100 Mitsubishi Regional Jets (MRJ) on Wednesday. The purchase is valued at $4.2 billion if purchased at list prices, and Mitsubishi president Hideo Egawa said he is “hoping to conclude firm agreement as soon as possible maybe within a few weeks.”

I was told by the Dan Robertson, Manager of Pilot Recruiting at ExpressJet, yesterday that they are going to continue interviewing pilots but that they had met their recruiting goals for now and probably wouldn’t be running any more New-hire training classes in the immediate future.

Boeing Increases Forecast for Airliners and Airline Pilots
Chicago-based aircraft manufacturer Boeing has revised its historically accurate forecast of aircraft sales upward, saying the world will need 34,000 new airliners over the next 20 years and the business will be worth $4.5 trillion. That is an increase of half of a trillion dollars up from a mere $4 trillion predicted in its previous forecast.
